Responsibility Training/Learning
We believe in a God of order, not chaos. He designed humankind and set up the family structure for us to know Him. He gave us principles in Scripture that show us His design for families, and He’s given us his Spirit and His community to help us put those principles into action in our daily lives. There is freedom and flexibility in a lot of parenting choices, but here you will find advice and encouragement regarding responsibility training/learning.
*Responsibility training/learning starts with sleep learning for our infants and continues in helping our children learn to honor and obey their parents, even at a young age. As they grow, we want them to be confident and capable in life, as they depend on God’s strength.
Responsibility Training/Learning is the term we use when talking about how parents encourage the child to move toward maturity. Each step happens as the parent observes that the child has developed the abilities required for that next task and teaches him to do it independently. As he learns that task it now becomes the child’s to do without help (even if it would be easier and faster if the parent did it for him.)
This growth happens in specific areas of life – socially, emotionally, intellectually, language development, physically (small and gross motor skills) and spiritually.
In pregnancy the parents, in partnership with God, have total responsibility (proper nutrition, fluids, rest, protein, exercise, etc.) and the child has no responsibility. After the baby is born parents continue to have a great responsibility but not total. A small degree is given to the child as he learns to live outside of the womb and become part of the family (not the center of it). His part gradually increases as he develops and grows. Parents, still in partnership with God, may have the next 18-23 years to prepare him to be released into adulthood, no longer depending on the parents but instead depending on God. What an awesome privilege God has given parents as we nurture our children “in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.” Ephesians 6:4

When do we begin?
Bringing Up Baby with Joy (The first seven months)
Once the baby is born she (the baby) begins to have a part in the growing process. This adventure will be one step at a time, in concert with God who made her and knows her best. We have the privilege to help our child begin, in very gradual steps to take responsibility for what she is developmentally able to do. As a newborn she will still be very dependent on the adults in her life to meet her needs but there are small ways that we can help our infant to begin to move to maturity and to help her be a part of our family routine.
